Biblical Models of Education: A Holistic Approach to Knowledge, Character, Faith, and Service

Abstract: Education in the Bible extends beyond the transmission of information and encompasses the formation of character, spiritual growth, practical skills, and preparation for service. Although Scripture does not present a formal educational system comparable to modern institutions, it provides diverse models of teaching and learning embedded within family life, religious institutions, mentorship relationships, and community practices. This paper examines the major forms of education described in the Bible, including family-based education, priestly instruction, wisdom education, prophetic training, synagogue and temple learning, apprenticeship, discipleship, and public teaching. Through an analysis of relevant biblical texts and scholarly perspectives, the study demonstrates that biblical education is holistic in nature, integrating intellectual, moral, spiritual, and vocational development. The findings suggest that contemporary educational systems may benefit from incorporating biblical principles that emphasize character formation, mentorship, community engagement, and lifelong learning.
